Temu, Shein Lag Behind Amazon as Online Holiday Shopping Ra…

[ad_1]

Upstart online retailers Temu and Shein are drawing millions of window shoppers to their websites this holiday season, but they far lag market leader Amazon where it counts – turning those visits into actual sales.

Nine out of ten visitors to their websites were window shoppers, not buyers, according to SimilarWeb, a website data tracking firm.

Singapore-based Shein this year added kitchen mixers at $100, $10 bathroom holiday decorations and $6 headphones alongside clothing such as $13 dresses and $16 jeans. PDD Group’s Temu sells $9 dresses and $12 women’s shoes.

Shein’s website drew 28.6 million unique monthly visitors in October, up 7.25 percent from a year earlier, according to SimilarWeb. But visits to Shein’s website that resulted in actual transactions declined to 4.1 percent from 4.6 percent a year earlier.

Amazon trounces both online retailers with 56 percent of its 268 million unique monthly visits in October resulting in purchases, its data shows.

Temu, which launched in the US in September 2022, is offering deals for cheap goods for the holiday shopping season. It had 42 million unique monthly visitors in October 2023, more than four times the amount a year earlier. Only 4.5 percent of those resulted in actual transactions.

The additional eyeballs on the retail websites is thanks to aggressive marketing. Shein is ramping up holiday marketing in the US and Europe as it extends its reach and products on its platform. The company’s valuation rose to $90 billion after it acquired UK-based online retailer Missguided in October.

Shein increased its ad spend 60 percent in the first two weeks of November, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to data from marketing intelligence firm SensorTower. Its rival, Temu, doubled its ad spend within the same time frame, the data showed. SensorTower does not provide dollar amounts for ad spend.

In New York’s Times Square Shein in November launched a pop-up shop in the Forever 21 store, highlighting home goods and apparel along with its first Times Square billboard.

Shein has been able to trump fast-fashion incumbents Inditex’s Zara and H&M, with revenues reaching $24 billion in the first three quarters of this year, according to reports.

But the fast-fashion giant continues to face more challenging competition from other online marketplaces such as Temu and Amazon.

Melissa Minkow, director of retail strategy at information technology firm CI&T, said that online shoppers have an “inherent comfort level” with Amazon’s expansive product categories, shipping speeds and return policies compared to Shein and Temu.

At Amazon, which hosted a two-day Prime event in October, purchasing visits and unique visitors in the US both increased in October compared to a year earlier, according to SimilarWeb.

Amazon cut its spending on advertising for the holidays in early November compared to a year ago, but saw more user engagement than it did in 2022, according to SensorTower.

The competitive landscape continues to heighten as shoppers get closer to Black Friday.

Peter Pernot-Day, head of corporate strategy at Shein, said Shein has advised its marketplace sellers “to optimise their product listings” by “providing competitive pricing and keeping inventory up to date.”

Things to know about Prime Day and more

[ad_1]

Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days event is next week: Oct. 10-11. Call it “Prime Day 2.0” if you agree the name doesn’t roll off the tongue. The event promises another round of lowered prices on all sorts of products and an opportunity to cross-shop competing retailers.

October sales at a glance

Black Friday in October may be Amazon’s idea, but other retailers aren’t to be out-dollared. Here’s a rundown of the deal dates and some need-to-knows.

Target Circle Week is already on, running Oct. 1-7.

  • Deals are exclusive to Target Circle members, but Circle is free to join and use.
  • Get discounts online or in-store on items ranging from toys and kitchen supplies to everyday essentials like diapers and wipes.

Walmart’s Deals Holiday Kickoff begins at 7 p.m. ET on Oct. 9 and runs through Oct. 12.

  • This sale isn’t exclusive to Walmart+ members, so all shoppers can access the deals.
  • Expect discounts on giftable items like electronics, apparel, home decor and more.

Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days begins at 3 a.m. ET on Oct. 10 and runs through Oct. 11.

  • Deals are exclusive to Amazon Prime members; Prime costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year. (There’s a 30-day free trial option for newbies.)
  • Expect deal drops throughout the event, and Prime members can request special invites ahead of time to doorbusters that may sell out.

5 Tips to Get Primed and Ready for Amazon’s October Prime Day

5 Tips to Get Primed and Ready for Amazon’s October Prime Day

Oh, and Best Buy has a 48-Hour Flash Sale on Oct. 10-11.

It’s like “shopping Armageddon,” says Charles Lindsey, associate professor of marketing at the University at Buffalo School of Management. “Retailers are going earlier and earlier every year in the hopes of locking in a certain percentage of consumers’ ‘holiday wallets’ before other retailers can,” he says.

Similar sales at the same time last year gave people a good reason to jump into Black Friday shopping early. Prices on popular products monitored by NerdWallet hit or matched year lows.

But the extended season of sales creates more opportunities for shoppers to bust their gift-buying budgets, says Lindsey.

Try these methods to shop the onslaught of early sales in a way that preserves your holiday wallet.

1. Make a game plan

Approach internet sales with a plan, says Lars Perner, assistant professor of clinical marketing at the University of Southern California. “If you go online and look at all of these great deals, you’re going to be tempted, and you may end up buying things that you otherwise wouldn’t have bought,” he adds.

Amazon shoppers can likely relate. You go online for a specific item, say a wireless mouse for your laptop, and you check out with the mouse, plus a massage gun and a DIY home security system because of the in-your-face markdowns.

Make a list of what you need and know your gift-buying and fun money budget before you browse.

“We only have a limited amount of money to spend,” says Perner. So be ready to be enticed and understand the implications of overspending, he adds.

2. Shop intentionally and set a time limit

Maybe you’ve heard of timeboxing work tasks. It’s a strategy where you schedule time for a task, stay with it for a short burst, then move on. The concept promotes focus and clarity of objective, according to the Project Management Institute. You can use this method for a more focused and budget-conscious online shopping experience.

If you plan to peruse, resist the urge to check Amazon like a social media app, and pick a finite time of day to do it. Maybe you end your day with a half-hour online to browse the deals when your mind is clear and guard is up against overbuying.

3. Get a good price and know it

With deals happening all the time, it’s no longer enough to take the sale price at face value. Perner points out how markdowns can be misleading.

“The deal might say 45% off, but that’s not going to be 45% off the regular price,” he says. Instead, it’s more likely to be a percentage off the item’s list or suggested retail price, which might not reflect what the retailer typically charges.

“It may still be a nice deal, you know, 15% off, say, the regular price. But again, some of the discounts are going to seem bigger than they really are,” says Perner.

You can easily get a feel for the going rate before you buy. Lindsey encourages shoppers to use a site like Camelcamelcamel, which tracks the price history of products sold on Amazon, or other browser-based coupon finders to confirm the quality of deals. The Honey extension, a software add-on for browsers like Chrome, also displays the price of products over time.

4. Wait for Black Friday if you want

Of course, you can roll the dice and wait for the day after Thanksgiving. NerdWallet’s data shows Prime Day and early October sales like Prime Big Deal Days present prices competitive with Black Friday, but there’s no substitute for the real thing. Actual Black Friday (and Cyber Monday) sales events still rock, and there’s less threat of disruption this year.

“The last few years [of] Black Friday sales might have been more limited during the pandemic,” says Perner. He recalls the supply chain challenges and backlog of ships coming into ports.

“But we’re past that now, and the Chinese economy is slowing down,” he adds.

Perner says those factors could lower the cost to produce imported goods. That could lead retailers to offer even better deals.

5. Skip the deal days altogether

Perner says sometimes he’ll check out Amazon’s deal of the day when he needs a break, but he has become better able to resist buying things over time. One tactic he suggests: Let the delivery boxes accumulate in the hall or garage as “visual evidence of how much you might be buying.”

Maybe you don’t need all that stuff.

It certainly is hard to put down the phone or close the laptop when holiday sales kickoff days have a regular place on the calendar and in the culture. But if you can resist the temptation, you could save the most money by skipping the deal days altogether.

Jacob Elordi cast in Australian Amazon Prime series The Nar…

[ad_1]

Jacob Elordi is having a very good year.

The Australian actor and Hollywood Bright Young Thing has landed a role in a five-part drama series called The Narrow Road to the Deep North, adapted from an award-winning book by acclaimed writer Richard Flanagan.

The show will also star Irish legend Ciaran Hinds, Simon Baker, The Last Stand’s Odessa Young, Elvis’s Olivia DeJonge, Heartbreak High’s Thomas Weatherall and Heather Mitchell.

The series has been commissioned by Amazon Prime Video and is in production in New South Wales. Elordi was photographed arriving at Sydney Airport in late October.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North will be a historical epic that will span decades, centred on a soldier named Dorrigo Evans who is taken as a prisoner-of-war on the Thailand-Burma Railway and later becomes a war hero and surgeon. Elordi will play the younger Evans before Hinds takes over the role in the character’s later years.

Filmmaker Justin Kurzel will direct all the episodes from a screenplay by Shaun Grant. Kurzel and Grant have previously worked together on Kurzel’s films Nitram, True History of the Kelly Gang and Snowtown.

The series will receive government funding and support through Screen Australia and Screen NSW.

The Brisbane-born Elordi, 26, is riding a wave of high-profile projects. He broke out in 2018 in the popular Netflix young adult rom-com The Kissing Booth before going on to play a prominent role in HBO series Euphoria, alongside Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney.

Elordi is currently in two award-season contenders, Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, in which he plays an aristocratic university student, and Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, in which he stars as Elvis Presley.

He has also wrapped production on two upcoming films including Oh, Canada, a drama written and directed by Paul Schrader (American Gigolo, First Reformed) that also stars Richard Gere.

3 movies leaving Prime Video in November you have to watch

[ad_1]

Every month, movies come and go from Amazon Prime Video. It’s tough to keep up. You might see a movie one day and think you have time to watch it. Then check back a week later and it’s gone. Lots of titles tend to leave Amazon, particularly towards the end of each month.

When it comes to movies leaving Prime Video in November, some have already disappeared, like Jurassic World Dominion and Serpico. But a few, including obscure, indie movies that would likely never have otherwise been on your radar, will still be available for a few more days or weeks. After that, they’ll be gone from the streaming service. So check these out before you need to hunt them down elsewhere.

District 13 – Ultimatum (2010)

Available with English subtitles, this French action thriller serves as a sequel to the 2004 movie District 13 and takes place three years after the events of the original movie. Five rival territorial gang lords are trying to take over the district once held by the now-dead gang overlord Taha Ben Mahmoud.

With corrupt government agents, drug dealers, and persistent conflict, District 13 – Ultimatum is an exciting watch the entire way through. Written and produced by Luc Besson, known for movies like The Fifth Element, critics praise District 13 – Ultimatum for its adrenaline and high entertainment value, a solid but overlooked entry in the action movie genre.

Stream District 13 – Ultimatum on Prime Video.

Miami Blues (1990)

Alec Baldwin stars in this ‘90s neo-noir black comedy crime drama based on the Charles Willeford novel of the same name. He’s Frederick J. Frenger Jr. (Junior, for short) a violent sociopath with a penchant for thievery. When he accidentally kills a Hare Krishna in the airport after having just been released from prison, Junior is hunted down by a police sergeant named Hoke (Fred Ward) who is convinced of his guilt.

The cat and mouse games lead to many twists and turns as Junior does whatever is necessary to skirt the long arm of the law; even impersonating an officer himself. Miami Blues has been called an “off-kilter crime caper.” Baldwin’s comedic chops are on full display in this murderous movie. But the supporting cast members are also praised for their scene-stealing roles, including Jennifer Jason Leigh and the late Charles Napier.

Stream Miami Blues on Prime Video.

Cutter’s Way (1981)

From way back in the early ‘80s, Cutter’s Way made its mark as one of late director Ivan Passer’s best works (he also directed Stalin in 1992). Originally titled Cutter and Bone, Jeff Bridges (The Old Man) stars as Richard Bone, a man who witnesses a stranger throwing something into a garbage can on the side of the road. He later learns that it may have been the body of a missing young girl.

Now, Bone is no longer an innocent man whose car broke down on the side of the road at the wrong place and wrong time. He has become a suspect. His friend, a brash and troubled Vietnam veteran named Alex Cutter (John Heard), decides to help when Richard swears he spots the guilty man at a local parade. It appears that he might be local tycoon J.J. Cord (Stephen Elliott). The situation begins to unravel, conspiracy theories develop, and Cutter and Bone find themselves in a dangerous position. Cutter’s Way has both a compelling story and a fabulously convincing cast.

Ciaran Hinds Joins Series Cast

[ad_1]

Veteran actor Ciaran Hinds and Odessa Young have joined Euphoria star Jacob Elordi in the cast of premium Australian miniseries “The Narrow Road to the Deep North.” Production is now under way.

An adaptation of the Booker Prize-winning novel by Richard Flanaghan, the five-part series is love story set against the backdrop of World War II. Production is by Curio Pictures with Prime Video releasing the title in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In other territories, it distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

Flanaghan’s novel, published in 2013, chronicles a century dominated by war, with the forced labor on the Thai-Burma Railway as its dramatic heart. The story is told by an Australian doctor who was taken prisoner during World War II and became an unlikely and uncomfortable hero after the war’s end.

The series has been in development for several years and was previously announced on the slate of Fremantle. Principal production funding is provided by Screen Australia, with assistance from the New South Wales government through Screen NSW’s Made in NSW and PDV Funds.

The adaptation, which uses multiple time frames, boasts a powerful creative team in screenwriter Shaun Grant and director Justin Kurzel. The pair previously worked together on disturbing Cannes competition film “Nitram.” Grant and Kurzel both serve as executive producers, with Alexandra Taussig producing.

Kurzel also previously directed Cannes competition film “Macbeth” and “Assassin’s Creed” and parts of Apple TV+ series “Shantaram.” Grant has writing credits that include “Berlin Syndrome” and “Jasper Jones,” David Fincher’s acclaimed Netflix series “Mindhunter” and feature film “Penguin Bloom,” starring Naomi Watts.

The series’ other key cast include Olivia DeJonge (“Elvis”), Heather Mitchell (“Love Me,” “Upright”), Thomas Weatherall (“Heartbreak High”), Show Kasamatsu, and Simon Baker (“Limbo,” “Breath”).

“The power of the storytelling, which began with Richard Flanagan’s seminal novel; the brilliance of the creative team, led by Shaun Grant and Justin Kurzel; and our breathtakingly accomplished cast will make this a landmark production for Australian television and a sweeping story to be embraced by audiences around the world,” said Curio Pictures’ Jo Porter and Rachel Gardner.

“ ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’ promises to be a cinematic, visceral, and undeniable contemporary love story, which explores the power of mateship and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity,” said Sarah Christie, senior development executive at Amazon MGM Studios.

Screen Australia Head of Content Grainne Brunsdon, said: “Shaun Grant and Justin Kurzel have created an epic war drama from Richard Flanagan’s novel, steeped in love and transformational power. Full of grandeur and richness, this series brings to life the horror and realities of war and imprisonment.”

New York’s new Amazon Fresh store still a shell, but compan…

[ad_1]

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — While the future of new Amazon Fresh stores in New York remains unknown, Amazon is reimagining new ways to expand its grocery services across the United States.

Amazon Fresh is a new grocery store designed to offer a seamless grocery shopping experience both online or in-store. Customers can find a wide assortment of national brands and produce, meat, and seafood — as well as prepared foods made fresh in-store. To make shopping more convenient, it offers Just Walk Out shopping and Amazon Dash Cart, which enable customers to skip the checkout line and new Alexa features to help customers manage their shopping lists to better navigate aisles.

Based on outward appearances, which include an enabled WiFi hotspot and a pending state liquor license, a new Amazon Fresh store seemed to be slated for Staten Island. But according to statements shared by Amazon in April, the 44,448-square-foot strip-mall anchor remains a shell.

It’s because the company put all Fresh expansions on “pause.”

Physical storefronts began launched in 2020 with locations spreading rapidly across the country for two years — but soon, those expansions were put on a pause as stores weren’t performing as expected. Supermarket analyst Matthew Casey, owner of Matthew P. Casey & Associates in Rahway, told the Asbury Park Press last year that Amazon Fresh locations are “poorly producing stores.” In his store visits, employees assembling online orders for grocery deliveries outnumbered actual customers.

The Staten Island location would have become the first to open in New York City.

As more potential openings were “frozen,” Amazon began its efforts to reimagine its existing Fresh stores. It redesigned stores in Chicago — bringing more sales and promotions, improvements in selection and stock, friendly and helpful employees, and a more inviting space. It unveiled similar updates to three stores in Los Angeles, Calif.

It also expanded selections to include more than 2,000 national and private-label brand products, a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop, and more. Refreshed stores also offer new options to use when shopping or checking out — with Dash Cart, a smart shopping cart that allows customers to shop the store, discover new items, find the best deals, and skip the checkout line. A new self-checkout allows customers to save time on grocery trips, while traditional checkouts also remain available.

Now, Amazon is offering new plans for its grocery service — offering grocery delivery and free pickup to all customers in cities and towns in the United States where Amazon Fresh is available for Prime members. The service expansion, which was announced earlier this month, will make it easier for all customers, whether they have Prime or not, to get groceries both in-store and online, says Amazon.

Customers can now order delivery from a variety of local grocery and specialty retailers available on Amazon.com, including Bristol Farms, Cardenas Markets, Pet Food Express, Weis Markets, and Save Mart. An expansion of service is also slated from Whole Foods Market for non-Prime members. One fully launched across all Whole Foods Market locations, customers in more than 3,500 cities and towns across the U.S. will have access to two-hour grocery delivery from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods Market.

With the holiday season approaching, more deals are available, with low prices of items and more promotions available to offer savings to customers, according to Amazon.

There is only one Amazon Fresh store in New York State — located at 3620 Long Beach Rd., in Oceanside, N.Y.
