The best award-winning movies to watch on Netflix this long weekend

Looking for something to relax with this long weekend?

Keen on engrossing and entertaining viewing, but with a story that doesn’t require you to commit to much more than two hours before you get a suitable payoff?

Million Dollar Baby, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and 1917 are among the best award-winning movies available to stream on Netflix this long weekend.

Million Dollar Baby, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and 1917 are among the best award-winning movies available to stream on Netflix this long weekend.

Amongst its vast and somewhat eclectic range of flicks, Netflix has a range of award-winning movies from the last half-century.

After looking through the current line-up, Stuff to Watch has come with 10 titles that we believe will more than fit the bill.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

A heady combination of visceral horrors and disquieting, often dissonant, audio accompaniment is at the heart of this stunning latest adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s more than 90-year-old novel.

While making a few changes, most notably around the already very non-Hollywood ending, to heighten the tragedy and pointlessness of the conflict (as a title card notes, three million people lost their lives over a “front line” that barely moved over the course of four years), this All Quiet is still very much the traumatising experiences of young German soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer).

Argo (2012)

Sometimes truth really is stranger than fiction. Thanks to CIA files declassified in 1997, Hollywood was finally able to tell the tale of how an Oscar-winning make-up artist helped rescue six American embassy officials trapped in Iran in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Shah and the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini.

As this tightly wound, adroitly put together drama explains, the operation was a fine example of international co-operation and the global embrace of American science- fiction in the late 1970s.

Director Ben Affleck also heads a terrific acting ensemble that features John Goodman, Alan Arkin and Bryan Cranston.

The Godfather (1972)

Director Francis Ford Coppola evocatively brings to life Mario Puzo’s best-selling 1969 novel chronicling the Corleone crime family.

Not only does it make terrific use of a truly impressive acting ensemble (a deep bench of talent that includes everyone from James Caan to Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton and, of course, Marlon Brando), but it is filled with memorable, now iconic cinematic moments. There’s the present left on the bed, the visit to the toll booth and, naturally, the first time we meet Brando’s Don Corleone, a scene which culminates in him saying the immortal line: “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse”.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

Brought to life via some truly evocative and spellbinding stop-motion animation (courtesy of The Jim Henson Company) – you can see the Italian pine wood grain and feel the expressions of joy and grief etched in their magnificently realised visages – the Mexican director cleverly shifts the action from Carlo Collodi’s beloved 1883 novel’s traditional 19th Century setting to 1930s Italy. The shadow of fascism looms large over the story, with even then Italian leader Benito Mussolini himself making an appearance. Boasting a vocal cast that includes Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton and David Bradley, this is a tale full of resonance, jaw-dropping visuals and emotional storytelling

Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood teamed up for Million Dollar Baby.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Despite being in a leading role, director Clint Eastwood actually takes a back seat to the superb combination of Morgan Freeman and Swank in this Oscar-winning boxing drama.

Packing a powerful emotional punch, it also produced one of the twists of that decade, which left many audience members in shock.

“She is an extraordinary bundle of ferocity and ice,” The Times’ James Christopher wrote of Swank’s Academy Award-winning performance.

While the story itself in 1917 is engrossing, director Sam Mendes elevates it to another level by making it seem to play out in real time and via a single, continuous shot.

UNIVERSAL

1917 (2019)

Like Sir Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old, this is inspired by the exploits of the film-maker’s grandfather in “The Great War”. Sir Sam Mendes says the story (co-written with Penny Dreadful’s Krysty Wilson-Cairns) was based around a “fragment” Alfred Mendes told to him.

But while the story itself is engrossing, Mendes elevates it to another level by making it seem to play out in real time and via a single, continuous shot. The breathless action, excellent sound design and Thomas Newman’s urgent, driving score ensuring it is very much a cinematic spectacle.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

Sure some of this psychological drama’s tone and actions of the main characters may not quite gel with modern audiences’ sensibilities now, but there’s no doubting the power of the performances in Milos Forman’s adaptation of Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel.

Jack Nicholson is at his charismatic and unpredictable best as a Korean War veteran and criminal who decides to take on the system, after he’s admitted to a mental institution. However, it’s his nemesis, Louise Fletcher’s Nurse Ratched, who really steals the show.

Amongst an impressive supporting cast, look out for future Taxi duo Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper starred and sparred opposite one another in Silver Linings Playbook.

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Loosely based on Matthew Quick’s 2008 novel of the same name, this drama plays like a more grounded version of Benny and Joon, or Sleepless in Seattle: The Bipolar Edition, than the portrait of a man trying to remake himself – as two troubled souls stumble their way towards some kind of happiness.

As with many of David O. Russell’s tales (The Fighter, Amsterdam) though, this movie is about the actors and the juicy script Russell has delivered them. Bradley Cooper manages to be charismatic, despite his character’s inability to “filter himself” while talking, while Robert De Niro delivers one of his best performances of the past two decades.

However, the real star is Jennifer Lawrence. Best known at this point in her career for playing backwoods characters in Winter’s Bone and The Hunger Games, here she proved she can do cynical and urbane, as a troubled young widow drawn to Cooper’s breathless optimism.

Slumdog Millionaire is a tale full of toe tapping tunes, incredible imagery and, sometimes, almost unbearable tension.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

Danny Boyle directs this true crowd-pleaser about a Mumbai teen who grew up in the slums and becomes a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? As he continues to excel and close in one the big prize, officials become convinced that he has to be cheating in some way.

A loose version of Vikas Swarup’s 2005 novel Q&A, it’s the movie that introduced the world to Dev Patel and everyone outside of the sub-continent to Anil Kapoor and the Bollywood musical stylings of AS Rahmen.

Spotlight (2015)

A clever, compelling and character-filled combination of All the Presidents’ Men, Zodiac and Sleepers, this Academy Awards Best Picture winner is both a fantastic recreation of a small group of journalists’ determination to get to the truth and paean to the dying art of in-depth investigative journalism.

Writer-director Tom McCarthy does a superb job of keeping all the story strands taut and judges the pacing perfectly, knowing just when to drive the story on and when to linger to add that extra layer of emotional depth.

It helps that he has such a superb ensemble cast headed by Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo.

Meet Netflix’s Top Leaders Who Drive Its Big Decisions: the Lstaff

  • This “Lstaff” includes co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos plus execs leading new areas like gaming and ads.
  • Meet the 25 Netflix leaders who make up the Lstaff below.

When Netflix is faced with a big, agenda-setting decision, it convenes a special team of business heads to debate the issue at hand.

This group, which numbers 25, has helped shape major company moves like its expansion into mobile games and advertising.

Known internally as the “Lstaff ” — the L stands for leadership — the group is made up of select department heads with diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and remits.

It consists of Netflix’s C-suite execs including co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, along with cofounder and executive chairman Reed Hastings, as well as other business leads like Bela Bajaria, the chief content officer who heads up global TV and film. Scott Stuber, the company’s film chair who rolls up to Bajaria, is also part of the Lstaff, as are Minyoung Kim — vice president of content for Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand — and Vernā Myers, who leads inclusion strategy.

The Lstaff has changed somewhat in the past couple of years to reflect exits, hires, and new areas of growth for the company. Recent additions include Jeremi Gorman, who was hired from Snap to build Netflix’s advertising business; Mike Verdu, who is leading its move into gaming; and Spencer Wang, who oversees a few areas at Netflix including its modest but growing M&A activity.

Bombay HC to hear Chhota Rajan’s suit against Netflix series Scoop next on June 7

Jailed underworld don Chhota Rajan is currently lodged in the Tihar jail. | Photo Credit: PTI

The Bombay High Court on Friday adjourned the suit filed by gangster Chhota Rajan against OTT platform Netflix’s series Scoop alleging infringement of personality rights & seeking Re 1 in damages. HC says the series is already released & asks respondents to file reply. Next hearing is on June 7.

Chhota Rajan’s case against Scoop

In 2022, Chhota Rajan, a former Indian gangster, filed a case against Netflix in the Bombay High Court, alleging that the streaming service had infringed on his copyright by using his name and likeness in the web series Scoop. Rajan argued that the series was based on his life without his permission and that it portrayed him in a defamatory light.

Netflix denied the allegations, arguing that the series was a work of fiction and that it did not use Rajan’s name or likeness without his permission. The company also argued that the series was protected by freedom of expression.

March 2023 ruling of the HC

In a ruling issued in March 2023, the Bombay High Court refused to direct Netflix to take down the series. However, the court did allow Rajan to amend his case and to seek damages from Netflix.

Rajan’s case against Netflix is one of several cases that have been filed against streaming services in recent years by individuals who allege that their copyrights have been infringed. These cases raise important questions about the extent to which streaming services can use real-life events and people in their productions.

Verizon Bundles Netflix, Paramount+, Showtime – The Hollywood Reporter

Amid calls to build back the pay TV landscape, streaming rivals Netflix and Paramount+ are being bundled together via Verizon +Play.

The telecom giant will see its subscription bundling platform for a limited time offer Netflix’s premium plan and the Paramount+ with Showtime in a bundle for $25.99 a month. Verizon is pointing to annual savings of $70, based on monthly retail pricing for Netflix and Paramount+ with Showtime.

The offer also comes ahead of Paramount, home of TV hits like Yellowjackets and Your Honor, launching its new Paramount+ with Showtime service on June 27, bringing Showtime’s programming into the main Paramount+ experience. The discounted rate for a Netflix and Paramount+ with Showtime package also shows one way to bundle more streaming services together to sign up more subscribers and reduce churn.

“With partners like Netflix and Paramount+ with Showtime on +Play, we’re leading the industry in offering customers the content they want, with never-before-seen bundles they can’t get anywhere else. And now with +Play as a perk offered with myPlan, we’re looking forward to even more customers taking advantage of the savings we have to offer,” Erin McPherson, chief content officer at Verizon Consumer Group, said in a statement.

Verizon is also extending its TV video strategy that markets third-party streaming platforms rather than owning and offering online platforms to mobile and broadband Internet customers through acquisitions. The Verizon +Play offer also comes as streamers are recalibrating to tackle rising content costs and get to profitability sooner for investors.

“By partnering with Verizon, we are making our broad and popular streaming offering on Paramount+ with Showtime just that more accessible,” Jeff Shultz, chief strategy officer and chief business development officer at Paramount Streaming, added in his own statement.

Is ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Streaming on Disney+ or Netflix?

It won’t be long until the highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 animated superhero movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse releases in theaters. Luckily, we have you covered on all the ways you can watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Taking place one year after its predecessor, the movie follows Miles Morales, a.k.a Spider Man (Shameik Moore), and his journey through the multiverse after reuniting with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld).

So, where can you watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse? When will it be on Netflix? Will it be on any other streamers?

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie:

WHERE TO WATCH SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE:

As of now, the only way to watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is to head out to a movie theater when it releases on Friday, June 2. You can find a local showing on Fandango. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for it to become available to purchase or rent on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple, Amazon and YouTube, or become available to stream on Netflix and Disney+. Read on for more information.

WILL SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE BE ON NETFLIX?

Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will eventually be on Netflix as a result of a deal inked between the streaming platform and the movie’s distributor, Sony Pictures. The deal gives the streamer U.S. rights to all the company’s theatrical films starting in 2022.

While a streaming release date has not yet been announced, we can make an estimate based on another recent Sony film. The Woman King was released in theaters on Sept. 16, 2022, before it came to Netflix on Feb. 16, 2023 — around five months after it debuted. If Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse follows the same pattern, we could be watching from the comfort of our homes by early November 2023.

However, a digital release date should arrive much sooner. The Storm Reid-led thriller Missing was released in theaters on Jan. 20 before becoming available to purchase or rent on March 7 — about 45 days after its debut. By that logic, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should come to digital by late mid-July 2023.

WILL SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE BE ON DISNEY PLUS?

Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will eventually come to Disney+ due to the company’s deal with Sony Pictures Releasing, which allows it access to all of Sony’s theatrical releases following their “Pay 1 TV Window.” This means that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters, then on digital, then on Netflix and finally on Disney platforms — meaning it’s going to be a while until this happens.

How to add an Extra Member to your Netflix account » EFTM

The glory days are over, no longer does “love means sharing your Netflix password” because Netflix has cracked down on just who can use your password and the answer is if they don’t live with you, they can’t.

Leaving aside the obvious controversy and frustration of many, the fact is it’s done and we’ve gotta get used to it.

So, with that in mind there is one thing you can do. You can add an “Extra Member” to your account, giving your kids, parents or in-laws just what they have now, but on their own login, paid by you at a cheaper rate than an individual plan.

If you’re on the Basic plan, you can’t add extra members. Only those on Standard or Premium plans can do so.

For Standard members you can add one extra member, for Premium you can have two.

First, on the web, not in the app – go to your Account Settings.

Look for the “EXTRA MEMBERS” section about half-way down. If you do not see this, it may be that you are accessing Netflix through a third party billing platform, like Foxtel. What they’ll likely tell you is you have to unbundle and bill direct with Netflix. But this is all new, perhaps that will improve.

Click the “Buy an extra member slot” and we’re off to the races.

Next up you’ll be shown an update to your monthly cost – just to be clear you know that YOU will be paying for it.

One confirmed, you just need to invite the new member to create their account.

Setup their name and email address for them to get a direct link to making all this work.

Here’s where it gets fun and really well done. From this point, you can now choose to convert one of your login Profiles to their new user account.

This means that when they create their own username and password login, they will have their viewing history, their recommendations and their “catch up where you left off all there for them.

Once you’ve done that, tell them to check their email and go ahead and create a new account!

It’s actually a really well thought out system, and the price is less than just stumping up for their Netflx account!

And a reminder, these changes do NOT impact the number of devices that CAN be using Netflix from your home, and from other places as long gas they come home once a month.

Here’s ALL the devices I’ve got using my account at home.

NFLX: Buy, Sell, or Hold in June: Netflix (NFLX)

Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) is an established leader in the streaming world. Despite a longstanding stronghold on the industry, the entry of major companies such as Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) and Walt Disney Co. (DIS) has separated the streaming market into a highly competitive arena. Mounting competition and an increasingly divided market share pose a significant challenge for the company.

NFLX has been on a wild ride in 2022 as it started losing subscribers, pushing its stock to a multiyear low. However, it has rebounded sharply.

NFLX recently announced that it has five million subscribers to its ad-supported service, leading the stock to skyrocket. The company said more than a quarter of new signups are opting for the ad-supported plan in countries where it’s available.

In addition, the company expanded its crackdown on password sharing to 103 countries and territories, alerting users that their accounts cannot be shared for free outside of their households and will be charged extra fees for shared passwords. The fee is $8 per month in the United States. Its ad-supported tier and password-sharing crackdown should boost cash generation.

However, NFLX’s recent move on free riders induces a risk of cancellations. According to a survey by Aluma Insights from last year, 13% of adult Netflix users said they would likely cancel the service if Netflix charged $3 per month for additional out-of-home users.

So, it could be best to wait for further operational updates to understand the true potential of its strategy before investing in the stock. In this article, we’ll take a deeper dive into some of its key metrics.

Tracking NFLX’s Net Income, Revenue, Gross Margin & Current Ratio

NFLX has shown a positive trend in net income over the past three years. Its net income at the end of June 2020 was $26.82 billion, indicating a 16.6% growth from June 2017, when net income was reported at $23.04 billion. Since then, net income has steadily increased until the end of September 2021, when it reached its peak of $50.50 billion. The net income then dropped by 8.3% to end the year at $51.2 billion. The most recent data at the end of March 2023 shows a net income of $41.0 billion, which is 3.4% lower than the previous year.

NFLX’s revenue has experienced growth from June 2020 to March 2023, increasing from $22.63 billion to $31.91 billion, with a growth rate of 38.9%. The most recent quarter saw a jump of 2.7% from June 2021 to March 2023.

NFLX’s gross margin has fluctuated from June 30, 2020, at 39.0%, to March 31, 2021, with a peak value of 41.1%. After that, there was a decline in the gross margin until March 31, 2023, when it stood at 38.3%. The gross margin has decreased by 14.3% since the start of the series.

The company’s current ratio has gradually increased from June 2020 (1.12) to March 2023 (1.26). However, there have been fluctuations, with a significant decrease in December 2021 (0.95) and moderate drops from June 2021 to September 2021 and September 2022 to December 2022. The overall trend is an increase in the current ratio. The growth rate is approximately 11.4% from June 2020 (1.12) to March 2023 (1.26).

NFLX’s Share Price Growth: 24% in 5 Months

There is an overall increasing trend in NFLX’s share prices between December 2022 and May 2023. The share price started at $318.16 on December 2, 2022, and grew to a high of $394.16 by May 30, 2023, a growth rate of 24%. Here is a chart of NFLX’s price over the past 180 days.

Analyzing NFLX’s POWR Ratings

NFLX has an overall C rating, translating to a Neutral in our POWR Ratings system. It is ranked #31 out of 58 stocks in the Internet category.

The POWR Ratings for NFLX show that the highest ratings are in the Quality and Sentiment dimensions, with ratings of 83 and 58 as of December 31, 2022, respectively. The Momentum dimension has remained consistent, rated seven from December 31, 2022, to May 30, 2023. ‘Stranger Things’ Writers Slam Netflix France For Claiming Season 5 Production Has Started: “We’re On Strike”

Netflix France has been banished to the Upside Down after their recent oopsie. The streaming platform wrongfully claimed that Stranger Things Season 5 was in production, despite the current Writers Guild of America strike. The misinfo was squashed by the Stranger Things Writers Twitter account, which was created by Caitlin Schneiderhan but has seen posts from the Duffer Brothers, themselves — but has the damage already been done?

In the wee hours of Wednesday (May 31), Netflix France tweeted, “la saison 5 est en production” underneath a post about Stranger Things. The message translates to “Season 5 is in production.” The tweet quickly gathered the attention of the show’s fervent fans who shared the information, eliciting criticism… And confusion from those following the news about the writers strike.

About an hour later, the Stranger Writers account responded, “No we’re not. We’re on strike. Are you okay France???” They followed up with another tweet, which reads, “Aren’t you French on strike all the time?? Of all the counties to get this wrong…”

Since then, both tweets from Netflix France have been deleted, and Decider can confirm that the Stranger Writers account is correct: Stranger Things is not currently in production.

The WGA strike began on May 2, 2023 after the Writers Guild was unable to negotiate fair pay and protections from streamers and studios amid the popularity of digital platforms. Netflix has consistently been named a key player in the strike. Outlets such as LA Times and The New York Times quickly dubbed it the “Netflix strike” and organizers have had to encourage protestors to gather at other studios.

Days after the strike commenced, Stranger Things co-showrunners Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer confirmed that production on the Netflix hit series will be paused until the ongoing strike has ended. “Duffers here. Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike,” wrote the Duffers on the Stranger Writers Twitter account on May 4. “We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out.” Earlier, the writers room Twitter account confirmed that writing on the fifth and final season began on August 2, 2022.

Unfortunately, Netflix France’s mistweet did major damage to the series as many fan accounts have also tweeted the false information, making it appear as though the production team is crossing the picket line. One fan noted this in the comment section, writing, “You know you deleted it too late and the screenshot is now doing the rounds?” Maybe Netflix didn’t get the memo: “Friends don’t lie.”
