Rebel Moon will be theatrically released in 70mm before it streams on Netflix.
As reported by Variety, Zack Snyder’s sci-fi blockbuster will play in select theaters from Dec. 15 to 21. The locations will be the Prince Charles Cinema in London, the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto, the Paris Theater in New York and the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. Netflix owns the latter two theaters and will stream Rebel Moon on Dec. 22.
Initially developed by Snyder as a Star Wars project, Rebel Moon eventually became its own production. Inspired by the works of Akira Kurosawa and Heavy Metal magazine, the film follows Kora (Sofia Boutella), a soldier who rallies a band of warriors from across the galaxy to defend against an evil empire. The ensemble cast includes Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Staz Nair, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Fra Free and Anthony Hopkins. Snyder directs the film from a script he wrote alongside Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten.
Snyder is planning to expand Rebel Moon into a cinematic universe with additional movies and tie-in content to expand the story’s galactic lore. The first installment has already been split into two parts, with the first film, A Child of Fire, releasing in 2023 and its follow-up, The Scargiver, dropping the following year. “When I pitched it to Netflix, the scale was a thing they wanted,” Snyder explained. “They were like, ‘Well, how big could it be? How many movies?’ That made me go, ‘Okay, if we really do this, we can sink our teeth pretty deep into this. We can’t really hit the bottom.'”
Snyder has already announced a prequel comic series, House of the Bloodaxe, which will be released by Titan Comics in January 2024 and fill in the story of siblings Darrian and Devra Bloodaxe, played by Fisher and Coleman. An animated series and a video game are also in development, with Snyder commenting, “They all take place before the events of the movie. So you can start to understand the vastness of the mythology that we’ve been working on.”. A tabletop RPG was likewise being worked on, but given that the publisher behind it, Evil Genius Games, has filed a lawsuit against Netflix alleging a breach of contract, the future of that particular project is unknown.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire will get a limited theatrical release on Dec. 15 before it streams on Netflix on Dec. 22.
