When does Neighbours return? Amazon Freevee start date, how…

Flaming galahs: Neighbours is back.

The hit Australian soap, which was cancelled in summer 2022 after 37 drama-packed years, has been revived, in a style befitting its vintage.

To the sadness of long-term fans of the classic soap, Channel 5 announced it would stop airing the show, only for production company Fremantle and streaming site Amazon Freevee to step in and save the beloved show just four months later.

The show provided a fertile training ground for some of our biggest stars, including Kylie Minogue, Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Jason Donovan and Isla Fisher.

And its “final” episode, broadcast in July 2022, attracted a whopping 2.5 million UK viewers.

Viewers can expect to see some both familiar and new faces popping up across Ramsay Street in the new reboot of Neighbours, which is now called Neighbours: A New Chapter.

Stalwarts returning to the fictional town of Erinsborough include Susan and Karl Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher), Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), Toadie (Ryan Moloney) and Jane Harris (Annie Jones).

Mike Young (Guy Pearce) will also reprise his role, after his character bought a home on Ramsay Street in the show’s finale.

The LA Confidential and Memento actor said he intended to leave the show “respectfully” after the surprise revival of the soap.

And The OC’s Mischa Barton has been confirmed as an unexpected cast member in the show, taking on the role of Reece, a mystery American.

Sneering, partying, bickering, a wedding, plus “a nest of secret affairs” – and that’s just in episode one, says i’s reviewer.

“From wedding day jitters, to snatched kisses, to Lassiters somehow staying in business, everything that made Neighbours so watchable for 37 years appears to be clear and present,” they continue.

“And it’s fair to say it returns with a traditionally soapy bang, the very first episode delivering a delicious twist so audacious I laughed out loud in delight and was tempted to rewind and watch it all over again.”
