Ali Wong proves she’s one to look out for after starring in Netflix’s hit series Beef

Every scene made her feel like she was trapped in a pressure cooker that was about to explode. Her skin broke out into an itchy rash on her last day of filming, and she couldn’t stop crying. 

After weeks of playing an angry, frustrated woman whose life spirals out of control following a road-rage incident, Ali Wong had had more than enough of those intense emotions. 

Ali is the star of the new Netflix hit Beef, but she had no idea how much of a toll the show would take on her mental health. As a stand-up comedian, the 41-year-old wasn’t used to the drama and emotion.

In one episode she’s running through a forest in the dead of night, hellbent on revenge, and in the next she’s turning on the waterworks and sobbing in a therapy session. 

Ali can barely recognise herself in the show. “I’m looking back on the footage and the episodes and being like, ‘Wow, who is that person?’” she says. 

“When I see myself, it’s mystifying and satisfying at the same time.”
